Launch of the Virtual Victorians website
January 29th, 2004
Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life is officially launching its highly successful online learning resource Virtual Victorians, created in partnership with the Telematics Centre at the University of Exeter, on Wednesday January 28th at the museum.
The latest stage of the website has been funded by the New Opportunities Fund and the Heathcoat Trust. Using artifacts, photographs and archive material from the museum collection Virtual Victorians explores life in Victorian times through the daily lives of the Poslett family, based on real people who lived in Tiverton and worked in the Heathcoat Factory. Extracts from the Heathcoat Factory logbook and the Tiverton Gazette, the latest additions to the site, let users read first hand accounts of factory life and local and national events. Then and Now allows you to look back at photographs of Tiverton and the surrounding villages from the last 100 years and compare them with the same scene today to see how things have changed. Visit www·victorians·org·uk to see these and many other features.
The website is a great success story, making the collection of a local Mid Devon Museum accessible to users worldwide. It received over 11 million hits in the three months leading up to Christmas and has certainly put the museum on the world wide map.
