About Medway - the new community website
November 21st, 2003

About Medway the new community website is being launched on Friday 21st November at the Sunlight Centre in Gillingham. 12pm -2pm.

About Medway is a new local website which has been created to help people to find the information they need to live their daily lives. Information can be difficult to find, particularly at times of crisis. About Medway is a lottery funded partnership project where information from a variety of sources is brought together in one place.

It contains local resources from over 500 local organisations and offers a range of information including doctors, dentists, support groups, charities, sports clubs, schools, halls for hire, arts and crafts, benefits, jobs and learning opportunities. The project has also provided free websites and training to local groups to enable them to establish a web presence and contribute to the development of Medway information on the world wide web. So far more than 70 local organisations have created websites with the project.(see http://www·onepine·info/medlibrary·htm)

The project is led by Medway Library and Information Service and key partners are the Council for Voluntary Service (Medway), Kent and Medway Strategic Health Authority and the Learning and Skills Council (Kent and Medway). Many local organisations, particularly from the voluntary sector are involved in the project.

About Medway is part of a national consortium called seamlessUK (www·seamlessuk·info) which is working with national information providers and local authorities so that national and local information can be found from one website.

** Standard Notes to Editors for press releases:

This project has been funded through the New Opportunities Fund's ground-breaking £50 million UK-wide digitisation programme is designed to enable the learning materials and resources currently contained in galleries, communities, libraries, museums, universities and other centres of excellence, to be directly accessible in homes and communities via the internet. The Fund is the biggest of the National Lottery good cause distributors.

The Fund has awarded grants to 150 organisations across the UK, large and small, which are converting a huge variety of material into digital format. The range of material being digitised includes archaeology, maritime, architecture, film, fine art, social and oral history. The New Opportunities Fund provides lottery funding for health, education and environment projects across the UK.
