While the Internet treasures of EnrichUK know no geographical
boundaries, many of the projects supported in England by the New Opportunities
Fund Digitisation programme address the special 'sense of place' which
communities share in areas throughout the country.
Over the next few months, the groups and organisations
funded by the digitisation programme will be gathering their material
and putting it into place. You will be able to access their collections
through the EnrichUK website.
In England, there is a wide variety of projects, either
online or in preparation, all focusing on different elements. Here are
some examples:
British Pathe
Project Name: British Pathe Film Archive

British Pathe is making available its entire film archive to schools and
libraries through the National Grid for Learning and the People's Network.
The archive covers news, sport, social history and entertainment from
1896 to 1970.
University of Sheffield
Project Name: The Cistercians in Yorkshire

The University of Sheffield is creating an interactive exploration of
the medieval Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire. A range of texts and visual
materials illustrating this culture, economy and daily life is being digitised.
This will include records of land holdings, archaeological artefacts,
writings and letters as well as 3D reconstructions of the churches and
monastries.
Plymouth Library
Project Name: Applause South West http://www·applausesw·org·uk

Applause South West will show a collection of historic and current
theatre activity in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall. Illustrations, photographs,
sound and video recordings will be presented and social, economic and
geographical information will also be included.
Liverpool Libraries & Information
Services Project Name: Mersey Gateway
The Mersey Gateway project will illustrate the history and growth of the
port of Liverpool, and the development of distinct communities within
the city and in towns on the Mersey. Photographs, maps, prints and written
archives are being gathered from a wide partnership of libraries, record
offices, University of Liverpool and National Museums and Galleries on
Merseyside.
Indian Institute Library
Project name: Digitial Shikshapatri

This project is digitising the Indian Institute's Shikshapatri manuscript,
one of the greatest treasures of British Hinduism. The Shikshapatri text
contains the essence of Hindu moral codes for everyday life has become
an object of pilgrimage from all over the world. The manuscript cannot
be handled by visitors due to its fragile state, and digitisation would
allow a more extensive study, contextualisation with a range of supporting
materials and wider access.
Potteries Museum &
Art Gallery
Project name: Exploring the Potteries

Exploring the Potteries will develop awareness of the character of the
North Staffordshire Potteries. It will provide access to digital information
about the natural environment and cultural heritage of the Potteries and
the surrounding area.
